40 Years of Civic Engagement

1987 The Center on Philanthropy is founded.

1990 The School of Medicine initiates its partnership with Moi University Medical School in Eldoret, Kenya.

1991 The Community Learning Network is established to bring learning opportunities to off-campus sites throughout Central Indiana.

1993 The Office of Service Learning is instituted to support the development of service learning classes at IUPUI.

1994 The Office of Community Service opens to promote voluntary service among IUPUI students, faculty, and staff.

1997 The Office of Neighborhood Resources is established to build campus-community partnerships with neighborhoods near IUPUI.

1999 The Community Service Scholarship Program (now named Sam H. Jones Scholarship Program) is instituted to support students committed to civic engagement.

2001 The Division of Community Dentistry is founded to promote student competence in dental public health skills.

2001 The Center for Service and Learning is formed by combining Office of Service Learning, Office of Community Service, and Office of Neighborhood Partnerships.

2002 The Office of Medical Service Learning is founded to expand school’s curriculum to include service learning in local communities.

2004 IUPUI completes its first comprehensive campaign, becoming the first public higher education institution in Indiana to raise more than $1 billion.

2006 IUPUI is one of three universities nationally to win Presidential Award for Community Service.

2007 The Center for Service and Learning is named a Signature Center for IUPUI to further develop CSL as a national leader in research on service learning.


40 Years of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

1974 Lawrence Einhorn and John Donohue develop a chemotherapy regimen and surgical technique for testicular cancer that leads to a 95 percent cure rate.

1983 Michael Conneally helps to identify the gene for Huntington’s Disease; this is the first time a gene related to a specific disease is identified.

1985 Indiana’s first bone marrow transplant program opens at Riley Hospital for Children.

1988 The first pancreatic transplant in Indiana is performed at University Hospital.

1994 First patent is granted to Keith L. March for the Closer, a device that closes the arterial hole after a heart catheterization.

1997 IU Research and Technology Corporation, Inc. (IURTC) is founded to handle IU’s intellectual property, trademarks, and business development activities.

1999 Operations center for Internet2 Abilene Network opens at IUPUI, linking dozens of universities and research centers.

2001 Indiana Genomics Initiative is launched with a $105 million grant from the Lilly Endowment.

2006 Translating Research into Practice (TRIP) initiative is launched.

2007 First IUPUI Signature Centers are named.

2007 Ghassan Kassab receives funding to test LumenRECON, a device that measures blood vessels for placement and sizing of cardiac stents.

2008 Research III building opens, marking the completion of a three-building, 500,000 square foot medical research complex on the IUPUI campus.


40 Years of Teaching and Learning

1973 IUPUI receives full accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

1990 The Undergraduate Education Center, the precursor to University College, is founded to support the needs of new students.

1995 The Center for Teaching and Learning is established to advance innovative teaching and promote student learning.

1997 University College, IUPUI’s academic home for entering students, is founded.

1998 The Principles of Undergraduate Learning are adopted by the faculty to define expectations for all IUPUI graduates.

2003 The Campus Apartments on the Riverwalk open, providing IUPUI students the opportunity for a residential college experience.

2005 The physical consolidation of the campus is completed with the move of the Herron School of Art and Design to Eskenazi Hall.

2005 The IU Mission Differentiation Project establishes IUPUI as Indiana’s urban research and academic health sciences campus.

2007 The IUPUI Academic Plan is developed with emphasis on promoting student learning and success.

2008 The IUPUI Campus Center opens and is used by 10,000-12,000 students, faculty, and staff daily.

2008 The Office of the Assistant Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is established to foster a welcoming learning environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
